This is one question I have always wanted to ask. Mostly ever since the Columbia disaster in 2003. I am watching the live coverage of Discovery's landing (online), and wondered why there's no feed from on board the shuttle. It would add to the interest of watching these flights.

Seanie - I don't beleive there is a live feed. However, there was a mounted video camera onboard Columbia - which can be handheld - and was for a while. This camera was running in the minutes leading up to the disaster - but excluding the last 11 minutes. I don't know if they stopped rolling or whether there is lost tape due to damage. The surviving tape recovered on the ground. It was released in 2003 (Via NASA TV) and can be accessed on youtube. I don't know if this camera has official purpose or whether it is there for the benefit of the crew.

The press release anouncing release of video: www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2003/feb/HP_news_n03023_prt.htm

I note at the end of the referenced NASA posting are instructions for subscribing to press releases via email - I might give that a go and that might be good for keeping abreast of things noteworthy - assuming they still operate the mailing list.

Given that disasters happen I think that it is unlikely that NASA would provide a live feed onboard that is accessible to the public.
