Hi all

I am looking to attempt the challenge this year either the 24th or 25th, what I am looking for is a good location someplace in Wicklow, high up, good eastern and southern views, does any one know of such a location?

Paul

You could walk up to the upper lake in Turlough Hill :-).

Would one of the car-parks over looking Lough Tay suit? Thye have good views to the South.

Hi Paul.
What about Lough Dan?
Or that field nearby that you and I visited last year?

Clear skies,

Aubrey.

Lough Dan is surrounded by the mountains and they should obscure the horizon. I would imagine Lough Tay would be similar to the west and east. What do you think of the car park at Brittas Bay? There are good views to the east and south, I think there are low hills to the west, Wicklow town is north and not much to the south.

Thanks for your keenness, Paul.
Whilst I am not bothered with the Messier Marathon, I would be willing to give it a try.
What about security?
Boy racers might be a problem.

The Brittas (South) Car-Park looks like it closes over night.

The Balinstoe car-park over lough Tay is up off the road. It has good south views but the East is not so good.

It does close, Michael the only drawback, there are small entrances, cars would be parked on the road, i plan to use binos, so not a problem, scopes a little different. I must take a trek up to Lough Tay to have a look.

Hi Michael and Paul.
I thought it would have been a good idea to bring our scopes.
I would be on for that if it is possible.

By the way, I would like to observe Venus.

Clear skies,

Aubrey.

Thanks Paul,

I could bring my dob. That's portable enough for this.

I took a trip down to lough Tay this afternoon, it looks a good site, there is a second site about 500 metres further down the road that looks better, there is a similar size car park, but a side road going up to a walkway and it is further back from the trees with a better chance to see the east.

I'm going to post a meeting on Meetup and see what comes of it.

We're aiming for Friday March 24th, weather permitting, Saturday 25th otherwise. I plan to be there by 18.00, sunset is 18.45.
Fingers crossed for the weather.

Hi Paul.
Friday 24th is good for me.
I am checking road maps for the R759.
I know it runs through Sally Gap.
We might have a peek at Venus and Mercury soon after sunset seeing that you are considering a 6 o'clock start.
Is there a good low western horizon?

Clear skies,
Aubrey.

Hello, Paul and Michael.

Is the observing session still on for Friday night at 6pm?
I reckon I will need 6 layers of clothing.
It is going to be jolly freezing.
We ought to bring de-icer for our windscreens.

Clear skies,

Aubrey.

If we do meet up at 6 pm, we will probably need a bit extra time to get up there.
M50 and M11 will have heavy traffic as people make their way home.

Clear skies,

Aubrey.

Guys, I won't be there, the flu has caught me for the first time in years, timing could not be worse.
Best of luck.

I am thinking of cancelling the whole event then.
There are too many security risks if there is going to be just Michael and me.
