Hello Duncan
This is fantastic news, I really hope you enjoy your stay. I actually had the pleasure of meeting yourself and Mr. John Braithwaite a number of years ago, a great experience for me indeed. I admire the enormous amount of valuable work in astronomy you guys do. Perhaps you could sign a copy of your book for me sometime; “Man and the Stars”, great read by the way.
There is astronomy clubs in that area of the country, the Cork and Kerry astronomy clubs spring to mind…
corkastronomyclub.com/
And the Kerry Astronomy club
www.kerryastronomyclub.com/
There is also Blackrock Castle Observatory in Cork, well worth a visit indeed
www.bco.ie/
I am sure that other members here on the forum from that region will offer a lot more information Duncan, I am based in the north-east.
All the very best and clear skies
Mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for getting back to me. I made two or three trips to Ireland with John Braithwaite, just to keep him company, on one of which we had a tour of Armagh Observatory. At that time I was involved with ASTRA, which was running Airdrie Observatory, and we had a number of exchange visits between the two, in one of which I lectured at Queen’s College, and another in which we staged a rocketry weekend for the Observatory.
Things move on and I’m now running a different charity, ACTA SCIO, under whose auspices my wife and I run the Astronomers of the Future Club in Troon, I’m editing the new magazine Space and Scotland, and I’ll be recreating the stone circle which I built with John Braithwaite, which is being moved to make way for redevelopment in the area. Sadly John won’t be with me on that – I don’t know if you know, but he died suddenly of liver cancer in 2012, leaving a great many projects unfinished.
Linda and I feel it’s time to move on and since she’s Irish, she would like to come back. Our trip to Clonakilty in April is for our anniversary but also very much a fact-finding exercise about moving over. We’ll be spending a day in Drogheda on the way there and another on the way back. Are you anywhere within reach and is there a chance of meeting up? I could sign that book (and bring the newest one – I’m up to 9 so far!)
Best wishes,
Duncan.

Yes, I remember Duncan you posted here on this forum the untimely demise of John, he was one amazing individual and a gentleman, very sad and shocked to hear the news at the time.
Drogheda is not far from me Duncan, about an hour, so it would be great to meet up in person.
Regards
Mike

Hello Duncan,
Long time no hear! Hope you're both keeping well.
I often think about John Braithwaite RIP since his passing in 2012
Great to hear you'll be relocating to Ireland..
I would love to meet up with you and Linda.
Although I live in the north west I could travel
and meet Mike and yourselves in the east of the country.
May be Mike and yourself could arrange a venue.
Best wishes
Eamonn.
