Astronomy question was created by Johnno
Folks,
I had an e-mail from a person wanting to know what links Armagh - Finvara - Edgeworth. I dont know why she wants to know this :?

Armagh -> Observatory
Finvara -> Uranus moon
Edgeworth -> Kuiper belt

Is there something in common here :?:

For a competition in the Irish times :-)

Here is my response to a similar enquiry:

I can't come up with a good answer...

Armagh, would seem to be a reference to Armagh Observatory, a lot of
research has gone on there over the years so that doesn't narrow it
down.

Finvara is a mystical place in Clare isn't it? Or is it a mystical
King from that area? Anyway, it's also the name of a crater on
Uranus's Moon Ariel.

Edgeworth could refer to Maria Edgeworth who has a crater on Venus
named after her. See the link above. But more likely would refer to
Kenneth Edgeworth who theorised about what is now known as the
Edgeworth-Kupier Belt. They were very distantly related I believe,
Kenneth was an amateur astronomer and came from Westmeath.

The best guess I can give is that I has to do with naming of
astronomical bodies. Currently in Armagh they do research into
asteroids recently Dr Apostolis Christou at Armagh Observatory got an
asteroid officially named after him. Finvara is the name of a crater.
And Edgeworth belatedly got credited with his theory on leftover
matter in the solar system, previously it was just called the Kuiper
Belt. That's a fairly tenuous link...

Cheers Al,
I haven't forwarded your response because it might be the same person that contacted you.
That's a tough astronomy related question the Irish Times to have.
Sounds to me like it could even have something to do with Irish folklore.

I think we must be missing something obvious, that or it was mentioned in an article in the Times recently, and you'll only get it if you bought and read the paper :-)

Armagh has an asteroid named after it. Ardmacha formerly asteroid 1987 QF6

so;

Asteroid 10501 Ardmacha
Asteroid 3487 Edgeworth
but no asteroid finvara that I know of unless it was named recently

There is a crater on Venus called edgeworth.

Also I saw the question posted on another BBS and it mentioned 'Kinvara' not 'Finvara' I dont know which is right. ANyone got the times handy to check?
