Customs and VAT was created by markdowling
Hi All,
I've a guy posting me an eyepiece(new) from the states. I bought it from scopetronix and mailed it to him as they won't ship Televue out of the states themselves.
He's asked me what I want to do about the VAT...pressumably details for the shipping copmpany...??
Anyone any experience in gettin stuff mailed from the states? I assume he needs to put a value on it and our 'friends' the custom and excise will intervene should they see fit(!).
Any advise would be much appreciated.
Mark

Mark:
The shipping company will describe the goods on the shipping note. They will also note the cost of the goods.
When it arrives in Ireland, customs will look at the description and if it is a dutiable good, they will then calculate duty on the cost of the goods.
The shipping company then adds on the VAT to the cost of the goods, the shipping, the insurance and the duty.
The shipping company, on delivery to your door, wil request all these charges.
The TARIC duty for telescope equipment, including eyepieces is 4.3%. VAT is 21%.
Now, this is how it works in theory. For some reason, my recent shipment escaped the attention of customs but the shipping company is still legally obliged to charge the VAT.
Of course, if you are not going through a reputable shippijng company, who knows what might happen...
Hope this helps...
Cheers
Dave
