Avatar's for Dummies was created by johnomahony
Could someone please explain how someone can load a picture from ones PC as an avatar on the boards. Please bear in mind that I am computer illiterate (verbally also) and a URL means absolutely nothing to me. Its not that I am stupid, its just that I have other things to do (okay maybe just a bit  ).
Help !!

John,
I assume you are looking at the 'Profile' page?
A URL is just the address of where the picture is stored on the web.
Best thing to do is make your avitar, upload it to Flickr and use the
address from that as if you were using it to put the image in a post.

Here are some tips John, hope they help.
First, check your Profile:
In there, at the bottom, you will see the space for your avatar details. It is handy to keep this open in a seperate browser window/tab and follow the next section in another window/tab. Of particular attention is that "Link to offsite avatar" box.
Next Section - find your image:
Use an online gallery site like fickr, myspace, bebo (the options are limitless), and upload a photo that you want to use as an avatar. Bear in mind that here on IFAS the limit is 75 pixels wide by 175 pixels high for an avatar image.
To get the image URL (Universal Resource Location):
All you do then is right click on your chosen image, and from your pop-up menu, select "Properties". A small independent browser box appears, with all the details of that image such as its dimensions, data size, and where is it located. In some cases, there may be 2 addresses - one is where the image is found on the web, the second is the path to that image. You want the path. It should end in an image tag e.g. .jpg, .gif, .png, and so on. Highlight this image path, right-click, and select "Copy".
And finally:
Then, back on IFAS, right-click on the space box next to "Link to offsite avatar" and select "Paste". Once you have the whole URL string in the box, click "Submit", and Bob's your uncle!
