We are currently cleaning out the attic in my Mams house, and in addition to my second ever telescope being up there, a Tasco 11TR White Tube, I found some very interesting correspondence with an Astronomy equipment supply company, based in Dublin 14 called "Astrophil"

The price sheets date from May 1988, and if I remember correctly, I got onto Dunsink to ask about telescopes, as I had gotten as much use out of the borrowed binoculars I had.

They must have forwarded details to these guys, who then posted out the many pricelists for various things.

I had forgotten all about these until now.

I have attached 3 of the sheets.
Just thought it might be of interest to some on here :)

I think I bought my first scope of this company, did they operate out of Churchtown? The scope was a Vixen 60mm refractor, now residing in the attic, they delivered to the house, which was decent of them.

This was in 1986, they were also advertising a Celestron Comet Catcher, a 5 inch reflector that I thought about, it didn't come with a tripod, but a photographic tripod would have sufficed, back then I didn't realise that size meant everything.

The pricelists state "S.H.E Lewis" and "D.E. Elliott" as the directors. Might shed some light.

Paul, some of the pricelists are for Vixen stuff.

Carl, that's mental, long time ago too

If I could get a pointer or 2 I could attach some of the sheets, anyone know why it wont attach pics?

hi everyone,

The "D. E. Elliott" is Dr. Ian Elliott, formerly a staff member of Dunsink Observatory. I'm not sure who "S. Lewis" is but maybe someone who was in DIAS ( www.dias.ie )?

I bought a Comet Catcher (5.5-inch f/3.64 Schmidt Newtonian) off Ian many years ago.

Ian often is at various science talks in Dublin and of course is who gave a number of presentations to various clubs on the Sun's variability and climate change.

atb,

John (Flannery)
