Should be called the "Opik-Oort Cloud" because Ernst Opik proposed its existence in 1932.
(Oort merely revived the theory in 1950)
There is an Irish Connection here.
Ernst Opik was an Estonian who spent from 1948 to 1981 at Armagh Observatory here in Ireland.

It’s Professor Bailey’s talk and his title, I am merely the messenger.

Just giving a bit of "Irish Interest" info about the Oort cloud Deirdre.
Not criticising the title at all.
The Oort Cloud is here to stay.
(Actually,it should be called the "Opik Cloud". No justice in this world.)
Peter.

His grandson Lembit Opik is a Lib Dem MP in the UK. He also has an interest in amateur astronomy and spoke at the European Dark Sky Symposium last yet.
