And the IFAS Astronomer of the Year 2011 is... was created by dmcdona
The votes have been cast, the tallymen have been hard at work for the weekend and we now have a result.
But before I divulge the IFAS Astronomer of the Year 2011, just a few words.
There are many people interested in the many aspects of astronomy. Some enjoy nothing more than getting to grips with Richard Feynman or Stephen Hawking. Others enjoy a dark clear night under the stars with their eyes, binoculars or a telescope. Some commit their observations of the heavens to paintings, drawing or photographs. Still others enjoy the outreach aspects of astronomy and work tirelessly at educating and informing the wider public. Of course, many people dip into all of the above.
Some folks are dedicated/lucky enough to discover the odd asteroid, supernova and variable star (ahem). These are certainly admirable pursuits but there many 'unsung heroes' out there who simply get on and do what they do. They run clubs, they share expertise, they give selflessly to the hobby and to the community.
So, without further ado, the IFAS Astronomer of the Year award 2011 has been awarded to a person who selflessly, tirelessly, without prompting and without fuss has provided us all with a comprehensive monthly Observing Guide for the last five years that no doubt has served many people very well indeed.
The IFAS Astronomer of the Year 2011 is Neil McKeown.
The warmest of congratulations to you Neil - this is very very richly deserved.

Many congratulations Neill. A well-deserved award.
Neill's monthly report is the centre piece of the NIAAS magazine every month, and I know that people always look forward to reading it.
