IAS Sandymount Observing January 10th @ 8PM

Hello All,

THe IAS' monthly Sidewalk Astronomy session will be held on the 10th January at the Martello tower car-park in Sandymount from 8 to 10PM.
We will be observing the 9 day old Moon and the planet Jupiter.

This is a free event and all are welcome.

As this event is weather dependant remember to check our website www.irishastrosoc.org on the day to see if we are going ahead.

If I could answer that I'd be living on my private island in the tropics:-) .

I'll check the weather on Friday at 3/4 and if it's looking bad it will be cancelled and the IAS website will be updated.

I have been informed that the Sidewalk Astronomy will be going ahead tonight and members will be there ar 8pm.

The forecast is for cloud clearing after 8pm, lets hope it is right.

Indeed it did turn out clear. What a pity everyone disappears at 10pm.
Liam Smyth and myself seemed to have observed Jupiter for most of the 2 hours.
2 big highlights for me were Europa appearing from behind the planet at precisely 20:52 -just as www.skyandtelescope.com had announced.
And secondly, the Great Red Spot was just below the South Equatorial Belt throughout the evening, and it appears to be quite a lovely red. I haven't seen it this red for 20 years.
