Comet Holmes

For how long more (do you estimate) that it will be viewable in our skies as a naked eye/binocular/small telescope object?

I ask because i have not seen it yet. I think in the last 5 weeks the skies have been cloudy except for 2 nights and both night i was too busy looking out for Geminids.

Ive only been able to use my new scope once since i bought it at the end of Nov.

I would be seriously peeved if i missed Holmes.

I aint shure bout how is left with but make it your biz to see it its super iv being watching it since it appeared its class

It's pretty faint now but still worth watching as there is a chance of a new outburst - the 1892 apparition was a similar outburst followed by a second, smaller outburst a couple of months later.

Yeah from what i have read about it, it does have a history of "out bursting". I must admit i never heard of it before this year. I was gonna say that it is strange that we dont know exactly how or why it has these outbursts..........but the technology back in 18?? didnt exist to find out why. It probably still doesnt..................but we are getting our 1st look at it since then and i know every Ob around the world is collecting as much data as possible about the comet. Who knows...............maybe in a couple of years when all the data is processed, we may finally discover what causes Holmes to burst into life in such a short space of time.

I'm thinking it is what the comet is made of that causes it. When it gets to a certain exact distance from the sun it bursts into life and multiplies in magnitude literally in a matter of hours.

It is a pretty unique comet.

So i will endevour to view it.

If this visitation of the comet follows in a similar manner to 1892, then we should be on the lookout for a second brightening in the second half of January, of course these are all probabily totally random, so it may happen or not, probabily not but who knows.
As for naked eye visibility, thats anyone's guess, it might be another month or 2.
