His quote does sum up the 8-planet solar system very well though.

I don't think so!

The only reason that Mercury and Jupiter are both called Planets is because the Greeks saw both of them as "Wanders"

They are otherwise even more different than "Chalk and Cheese".

As I said I woluld have left all the old "Classical"classifications that existed pre-Space Age.

(I would probably demote poor Pluto to "Minor Planet" though!)

I would then start a whole new category called "The New Planets".

"The New Planet Eris" sounds a lot better than the yuk term "The Plutoid Eris".

How New is is Newgrange?
How New is Newbridge, Co. Kildare?
How New is New York? New Orleans? New Ireland (Pacific Island)?
How New is Newquay in Cornwall?
How New is the New Forest in Britain?

How New is the New General Catalogue (NGC) of Deep Sky Objects?

"The New Planets" sounds a lot better than the dog's dinner we are being served up.

Incidentally, the word "New" is used in Biology to describe the Primates.

American Primates are known as "New World Primates".

We human beings, and our cousins on this side of the pond, are "Old World Primates" .

So "New Planets " has a scientific precedent.

("New"...... to Science obviously.)

So... if a Plutoid is a spherical body orbiting beyond Neptune, does Pluto cease becoming a Plutoid on the occasions it is inside Neptune's orbit? Give me a break!

It's worse than that, it's physics Jim!
