They could be image artifacts.
I guess we'll have to wait until (if) NASA explain...

Could it bee a software glitch, a buffer problem, there seems to be a dark patch right next to a bright patch, looks odd. Like light was taken from a section of an image and put over pixels right next to it. My bet goes on a software glitch in the system somewhere.

If you click "caption" against any image in
stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov/browse/2010/0...ahead/euvi/195/2048/
You'll find "Because of the high amount of compression used for the space weather beacon,
the image quality is far lower than in the final science product."
Now, "Lower quality" can be read "higher noise" - that noise can look like anything.
Look at a jpeg of the moon or something with compression turned up and I'd expect to see some detail that isn't really there.

Did Stereo ever capture a real transit?
Might be intresting to compare.
Image artifacts are my guess.
But how cool would it be to have
Aliens living in planet sized spheres in the Suns Corona!?
What a holliday destination!
