Hi i'm a newbie and would like to know if anyone nknows of good viewing sites in cork.. I live close to the city, so would like to find as place out from the city that not disturbed by the city lights

I'm afraid I'm no good to you on this one, except to suggest that you check out Cork Astronomical Society .

If my math is accurate, you may even be able to catch their next meeting which is tonight in UCC :!: :)

I'm tied up working nights for the next couple of weeks, but i'll be sure to catch one next month i'm starting a master in UCC so i can just hang around

Chris I live about 12 miles west of Cork city and there are dark skies out here, I can nearly always see the milky way but to the east of me you can see the lights of Cork city but it doesn't cover mush of the sky.
So 3 or 4 miles outside Ballincollig will give you somewhat dark skies.

Hi Chris,

Cork Astronomy club have a small observatory adjacent to the
Airport. Not entirely free of light pollution,but is the best
available in the city area. Our club hold lecture meetings each
month - Sept., to May - at the Civil Engineering building at
U.C.C. The first lecture of the new season will be held on
Monday 19th Sept., at 8 p.m. - New members welcome. Please
come along !!
