when i was growing up the street lites where white thats the 70s,,who the hell come up with the orange lite idea ,awful, dreary lite, an artist at the modern art gallery in kilmainem did a exhibiton on that dreadful orange lite, they showed how it effects colour, so describing an incident and trying to say what colour something was is,well would stand up in court.
example I noticed at the exhibiton pink looked brown or something ,its few years now kinda forget. thanks

If I understand you correctly, you are making refrence to the effect yellow street lights have in darkness on the colour reflected from objects such as cars or coats that we end up seeing.
I have heard about court cases where when witnesses gave the colour of cars alegeledy involved in criminal incidences they were proved wrong because, say for example a blue or red car will lock the same colour under a yellow street light.
The light pollution issue is a major one, but as of yet it is still poo poo'd by
politicians and the like....
It's kind of like the Surfers Against Aewage campagin....
It's only when something directly effect you that you take notice.

Good point Frank - but I think a lot of people will take notice in January when ESB prices rocket by 20 odd percent. Hopefully that will be domestic houses, businesses, local councils and Government organisations. And with the whopping hike in gas recently, I'd say energy efficiency will become a big deal over the winter - because it'll hit people where it hurts most - in their pockets. And the politicians, in an election year, will get it in the neck from me if they bother to call round.
I just spent 100 quid on replacing most of the bulbs in the house with the energy efficient ones. Hopefully they'll lessen the pain a bit. That said, next door just got a new extension finished - complete with gazillion watt security light

....and the funny thing is Dave that it is proven security lights don't really
make a hill of beans of a difference!
In fact, in one study carried out by the Met Police in London.
The light actually helped the intruders break in!

Interesting link to a "primer" on sodium streetlights.
www.nezumi.demon.co.uk/nonad/spectra.htm
One interesting quote from it:
"With UK streetlighting...as much as 30% goes straight up."
"Watling Street" is a very old English term for the Milky Way.
Probably trying to light up Watling Street as well!
Peter.
