I think your best chance is to get on the radio and get it to the publics attention.
I often hear on morning radio (J.Ryan etc) about the infamous sewrage works in Dublin and how everyone in the area are completely pissed about it,
There was also a talk about loud roadworks at night.

Is this thing shining into peoples houses/windows at night ????

As of last night the lights have been replaced by much lower powerd lights. Im not sure if the extra light has just been directed upwards or if they have actually changed the fittings. For anyone living around Dublin please let us know if you can still see these, in particular against clouds.

Cheers,

I'm in Leopardstown/Sandyford and the first night or two the lights were REALLY bright and very noticable. We've a lovely view Howth & Dublin! :)

The new lights seemed to be off the last couple of nights I think.

Then last night I saw the lights were much much less bright.
Brighter than red ones and I wouldn't like to live closer I think.
But at least the whole sky wasn't shimmering!

Were they operating at daytime power levels the first few nights maybe?

James.

this is most likley what they did, perhaps they should have pointed this out. Last Thursday ESB claimed 2000c power was the night time power and 200,000c was day time power, looks like last wednesday & thursday night got blasted with full daytime power, 100 times the 'norm'.

The northside people photographed it last thursday and got a very good shot of what it was like. I will scan the front page of the newspaper and post a link to the scan.

the story has ran on the front page of this weeks issue Aug 11th - 17th
here is a copy of the text.

Regards Brian Greene

BEAMING HELL
NEW chimney lights installed by the ESB at the Poolbeg generating station is affecting the quality of life for residents living along the coast, it was claimed this week. One Clontarf local was so put out by the lights that she contacted The Northside People and the Migraine Association to see if anything could be done to solve the problem.

Brian Greene, a Socialist Party representative in Dublin North East, also claimed that residents along the coastline from Howth to East Wall and further inland could see the light as it illuminates the night sky.

The ESB said that the lights are currently in test phase and apologised for any inconvenience caused during this period. The Seapark resident described the flashing light as a “strong strobe effect”.

“Although my home is several miles away, it is extremely strong and intrusive,” she said. “I am also concerned by the flashing effect as I suffer from migraine and epilepsy which are both triggered by bright, flashing lights.”

After going to bed one night last week, the woman said she pulled both sets of curtains to try and block out the light.

“When I woke at approximately 12.50am, I could see the flashing lights even through two sets of curtains,” she said. “In order to get back to sleep, I had to leave a bedside light on to lessen the effect of the flashing light. I have been suffering from migraine symptoms since then.

“I honestly feel that I am being tortured in my own home and neighbourhood by these lights,” she said. “I can’t bear the thought of continuous migraine symptoms and can’t even go out for a walk when the lights are flashing.

“Even standing at my front door with my back to the lights, I can see the reflection in my neighbour’s window across the road, so there is no escape from it,” the Seapark resident said.

An ESB spokesman told The Northside People that the original lights at Poolbeg were almost 35 years old and that they were no longer able to source spare parts and replacements.

He added that the chimneys in Poolbeg are 680 feet in height and are on the flight path for one of the runways at Dublin Airport.

“As a result, the chimney lights have to comply with the latest lighting standards as directed by the Irish Aviation Authority,” he explained. “These standards are set by the Irish Aviation Authority to ensure the safety of airline passengers and the public.”

The spokesman said that they are currently testing and commissioning the new lights on one of the chimneys to ensure they comply with these standards.

“Our intention is to comply with the standards while making the lights as unobtrusive as possible to the general public,” he said. “It is proposed that similar lights will be fitted to the second chimney in the next few weeks.”

Brian Greene claimed that the lights would affect most south facing bedrooms that are in sight of the towers.

“This is a major discomfort to residents who are forced to shutter out this nuisance or put up with it,” he said. “The effects on health caused by sleep deprivation from these lights will be felt by residents all along the coast."

Mr Greene has called on the ESB, Dublin City Council and the Aviation Authority to review the situation before adding a similar lighting system to the second tower.
