Is Zubeneschamali Green? was created by flt158
Just before I observed Saturn last night, I had a quick look at Beta Librae, or as it is sometimes known as Zubeneschamali. I wanted to see if it appeared green. I have a 6.2" apochromatic refractor with mirror diagonals and I observed the star at 40X. It is bright at 2.6 magnitude and its spectral class is B -which suggests blue white. Apochromatic refractors do kill false colours.
Initially, I did see a green tint but for no more than 3 seconds. Then the star appeared plain white for the rest of my time.
Has anyone else recorded what colour Beta Librae -even in the distant past? It is easy to find -almost north of Saturn.
I would be happy of any contributions even in the days to come.
N.B. Please do state what type your telescope is.
Thank you.
Aubrey.

Hi Aubery, yes I do remember reading some years ago about this star being green, it seems as though it is an old debate
earthsky.org/brightest-stars/libras-zube...-the-only-green-star
It's an interesting star, some agree, some don't, I'd like other people's opinion too.....

That is a great article, Keith. Thanks so much. Wikipedia states that the star's spectral class is blue white. So my wife Valerie and I are going to look at it again tonight (17th).
I aim to observe Saturn again too with 5 moons this time -Iapetus is nearby.
I shall report back tomorrow.

Hey Aubrey,
Ive heard this before but haven't seen it as green tbh, If I'm out again tonight, I'll have a look.
Other "green" stars are beta Bootes and gamma leonis, only because they're doubles and the contrast makes them look this way, in these cases the greenness is an optical illusion.

Good man, Dave. I had a feeling you would have an opinion on this issue. I have never seen either component of Gamma Leonis as having a green tint whether it was through a reflector or my current refractor . Just 2 lovely yellow stars for me over the years. And I have never observed Beta Bootis.
Thank you all the same.

Quite a few years ago, I saw the companion of Cor Caroli as distinctly green in my refractor. I remember discussing this with Neil P, and we both agreed that the companion is usually white.
So, we had a look at it one night with his refractor, and it was lilac!
Weird.
I've looked at Gamma Leonis many times and it has always struck me as an evenly matched golden/yellow pair.
Must have a look at Beta Bootis.
