Last Nights Aurora Watch was created by martinastro
Conor and i gave it our best go last night. The Auroral oval turned blood red and extended to the tip of france which was to good a situation to ignore! We met up at my house at midnight and walked over a mile out to the country to our choosen location on a hill over looking the town and distant mountains. It was a good location for Aurora watching. Even though the weather was against us we were determined to make an effort. We sat on an out crop of rocks with a large umbrella over our heads under rain and clouds hoping for a clear break but it never arrived. We didnt even see a star however we just glimpsed the moon peaking out from behind clouds later in the night. We still had a great time out here in the fresh air and had a reflective talk about astronomy, nature and life which helped time fly in. An owl flew in circles around us all night to keep us company. We ended the session at 03.00. The sky didnt play ball with us but it was time well spent. We plan to observe future Aurora and NLC displays from this location. Cant wait! Heres a few images for your amusement...

Thanks for the report lads. Weather has been rubbish lately...

I'd say the owl was protecting you from the other two dodgy characters clearly visible in your pics.

And pray tell how your philosphical discussion about life went...

:)
Cheers

LOL LOL LOL

There was so much discussed last night that i couldnt do it justice lol...topics like...big bang, dimensions, ET's, red giant phase of our star, end of life on earth, impacts, god, life after death, religon vs science, ligtning storms, NLC,s, previous aurora sightings, observing and i think vodka got a mention in there somewhere lol

That country area seems to promote good conversation..beats sitting in the house!

All best :D

We had clear(ish) skies here in Kerry last night but no sigh of any bright aurora (up till 1:30 anyway)
However I did not venture out to any really darksky location to check or try for a "photographic aurora" so maybe I may have missed it.
