I don't mean to belittle the post...
just couldn't resist.
Seriously...
is the general consensus that it is a balloon?

Hey, thanks for the comments all. I'd vote with the balloon theory, and even admit that it's probably not one of those massive Macy's parade balloons as I'd originally assumed because:
Even a couple thousand feet up, ground air turbulence diminishes so a relatively small balloon moves more smoothly, like a big object.
Some of those mylar "Animal balloons" are quite large (though not macy size), opaque and on a dull day wouldn't even shimmer as it would on a sunny day.
A carnival was at the national show center, near the airport, upwind from my house. They probably sell large dumbo or dinosaur shaped balloons. I'm going to show my daughter your CSI dumbo outline.
So if a Dumbo/Dinosaur shaped object shows up on Belfast city airport radar tonight, don't be afraid.
Did I ever tell you about the time my grandpa and I watched a life sized brontosaurus float in the morning mist of the Missouri river? Thirty years later I learned it was a promo for Sinclair petrol. Thanks Clive.
Sorry for the false (true) alarm.
