Sounds like you're putting that big glass to good use. As you can see from my sketch, even an ultra-ultra-wide (31mm Nagler + Astro-Physics Telecompressor) still only gives you about 1/3 of one of the two sides. M42's kind of the same -- they're both better targets for a Dob. (On the other hand, it's certainly more difficult to sketch from a big Dob, especially if you're up a ladder!)

Congrats on bagging M57's central star. A lot of PNs really allow a narrow instrument to shine. Some of my all-time favorites are NGC1535, the Eskimo and NGC7008, all of which show great detail at 400 or 500X.
