A radio ham friend Richard Ebbs EI2ID photographed two strange objects which seem to be burning up in the atmosphere on September 23rd 20-10 local time near Cork city, wonder if anybody knows what the objects are
The link is to the Cork Astronomy Clubs website where the image can be seen.

It certaily does look like something buring up and it seems to be heading pretty much straight down. I first thought it might have been a fireball but I guess the trajectory looks unlikely for that.

Just from looking at it I would guess it is something we launched that got bored up there and decided to come back down! No idea what it is though ... would be interesting to find out.

Just as a matter of interest, how fast did it appear to be moving?

Looks like either some satellite junk, or a genuine small rock that had split as it came through the atmosphere. Interesting that they are red in colour, not many space rocks glow red - usually blue or green. My bet is on some space junk. Cool sight though, wonder what it would be like in the dark. 8)

Well, it could be worse!!! take a look at this - September 29th, eastern india - 20 people injured !!

Charles, did you see todays astronomy picture of the day?

antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap031001.html

There are no details on the exact date time direction etc. But it could possibly be the same as was seen from Cork...

Cheers,
~Al
