Full moon at perigee, its noticably bigger, go out and look. was created by dave_lillis
Hi All,
I happened to be up early this morning and noticed the full moon out the window, to me something looked a little strange, it looked like it was actually bigger then usual, like the effect you get when its near the horizon although not as pronounced and maybe even brighter ????
I did a quick google search and found a few sites which say that the full moon is at perigee tonight, the closest its been at a full moon since March 1993.

anyone else see it ?
a pity we didnt know of this before hand.

It is a fantastic sight this morning for sure.
Amazing detail to be seen across the surface.

Ya, I was expecting this from last weeks notice on Spaceweather
to watch out for it.
It was clear-ish around moonrise so I was going for a shot then but as
per usual the clouds thwarted me.
I got a clear view of it about 40 deg high and it was actually dazzling.
When you looked away from it it took a few seconds for the image to fade from your eyes.
I brought my sister & wife out to look at it it was so unusual.
Next morning as I drove to work it was setting and had a larger than normal
'big moon' effect on the horizon - pity I couldnt get a snap of it but there you go.
From waht I heard it was 26K miles closer.

I'd a good look on the way to work on Sunday morning, and it was very large and very clear...almost like one of the superimposed photos seen regularly in some photo competitions.
It was indeed a sight to see, magnified even a bit more by proximity to the horizon.

Aye, the horizonal illusion really got me for the past couple of nights. While it was a nice sight, I am still fuming over the fact it washed out the Geminids! I even had Saturday night off work this year by coincidence and all... Did anyone see any Geminids this year?

No on the Geminids, but we did get a fantastic look right at moonrise Sun night, complete with a narrow cloud-band right through the center. My daughters thought it looked "very Haloweenish".
