That doesn't fit with me. You know those summer nights when the entire country is clear and when the satelite image shows that there is not so much as a cloud over the entire country (rare though these nights are!) it's on these kinds of nights that I've seen these flashes. Regualr lightning just doesn't seem to cut it IMO.

What about long distance lightning? I know of reports of it being seen over 50miles away

What about lots of dust high up in the atmosphere (say some from a volcanic
eruption / pollution or whatever) getting pulled into a jet stream and then the friction of all the charged particles building up from the movement creating
a static discharge?
(Blue jets and sprites just dont do it for me.)

Hi,
There was a report and photo of red lights in the sky on the TV last night (either BBC NI or UTV) going over Bangor, Co Down going in a westerly direction.
Did any astronomer sight this?

There is an ongoing discussion on the EAAS forum about this. Robert Cobain observed these lights. No definite ideas yet what they were, see link.
