Double Double Mark II

Hi all

For the first time in God knows how long I dug out the scope for a little observing. I decided to hunt down some doubles in Lyra and I came across STF 2470 and STF 2474 and I was immediately struck by the resemblence to the famous Double Double, they have different PAs, but a pair of easily resolved doubles close together is unusual, especially in the same constellation. I have returned to sketching and below is the sketch I made.



For comparison I've included a sketch of the Double Double I also completed last night.



Unfortunately the clouds rolled in around midnight thirty and cut short the session.

I have also rediscovered the joys, and the frustrations, of star hopping.

Well done Paul, good to see you sketching again. "Double doubles" makes a nice category. I only know of one other, 83 and 84 Leonis, which form a colourful combination of relatively bright stars at low magnification. Do you know of any other candidates?

Well Mike. I know they are not a double -double. But I enjoy Sigma Orionis and Struve 761. No matter what magnification I use, both the quadruple and triple are in the same field of view. I showed them to the Dublin Stargazers' Group last year, and they were blown away. I must check out 83 and 84 Leonis next spring. Thank you, Mike.

Hello Paul, I have not come across that Double Double yet it
looks easier than the Double Double maark 1. I sure wish I could
sketch like you. Another double I have been trying to split in
Lyra is 17 Lyra aka STF 2461 magnitudes 5.3 and 9.1 sep.4"
I can not say I have split it yet but there was a hint of something
there its a tough split for a 80mm scope, still waiting for a night
of very good seeing.

Well Paul. You have had me digging as to when I did split 17 Lyrae. It was back on the 27th August 1998!! And I needed 146X in a 8.75" Newtonian. A real trip down memory lane! Did you ever get your scope in full operating order?
