The compressed air issue always seems to result in polarised views. From the astro community, it seems that as long as you do not get the propellant onto the surface you are cleaning, its ok. After all, you want the surface to be clean of debris before you take a cloth to it. I would doubt the claim that a particle can be 'pushed' into the coating - that sounds really extreme. But then I'm not an expert..! I've use compressed air many times and as long as you're careful. its never harmed anything I've blown with it.
You could get away from compressed air if you could soak the lens in IPA solution or drape an IPA soaked cloth over the lens for a wee while. I also have a squeeze bottle that can assist - but I'm not sure if there are any electronics in your lens. I'd be wary of that. The pressure of the squirted IPA mix can help unclog dirt etc.
The IPA is very gentle - its a 6% IPA 94% ultra pure water mix. You can't a cleaner solution. I doubt you'll be able to get this particular mix anywhere - I can sure let you have some though. If you like, I can bring it over to the next KAS meeting or meet up with you before then. I'll throw you the cleanroom wipes too. You won't get them either... They'll both last a good few trips up and down the mountains. You could invest in a squeeze bottle though - a couple of quid from a chemist (probably). I'll fill it for ya.

I use it to clean my cassette heads - works a dream! Very gentle but does the job too.

I use 40% Isopropyl Alchohol and 60% distilled water. I do the wiping with lens tissue paper you can get from any camera store. Be careful of shop bought lens cleaners that leave a nasty residue.
You can get IPA in a chemist but you will have to explain what its for. Once you explain its for cleaning optics there shouldnt be a problem.

Too old. And leave it at that you raver you... When I was a lad we were happy with two tin cans and a bit of string for audio entertainment.
IPod? Humbug.
