Dave G - of course, the mount PE, polar alignment, orthogonlity etc are all reduced if you are autoguiding. With the proviso of course that the mount isn't too badly aligned and doesn't have horrendous periodic error. If you are using a seperate guidescope then flexure between the guider and imager will probably be your biggest issue. Unless you are using an SBIG imager with an in-built guide chip of course
My comments above refer to tracking errors on non-autoguided setups. With a good autoguiding setup, you can keep tracking for hours on end.
With the AP1200 I can track unguided for 30 minutes, hopefully that'll rise to one hour or more when they issue the new software...
Look forward to the article - that's sounds really cool and thanks for spending the time, assuming it'll be good
Trevor, the only issue with the SCT as the guidescope is you may not always find a bright star in its relatively small field of view compared to the 480mm refractor. Just something to watch for. OF course, if you swap the scopea round (guide with the refractor and image with the SCT) then that issue decreases. Good luck anyhow and keep us posted on your experience!
Cheers
Dave
