High Solar Activity

AURORA WATCH: Sunspot 649 has produced three X-class solar flares: two on July 15th (0141 UT and 1824 UT) and one, so far, on July 16th (0206 UT). None of these explosions hurled a coronal mass ejection directly toward Earth, so the chances for bright auroras remain low despite the high solar activity, do ye think it is possible we could see the aurora with the all night twilight?

If it's a big enogh aurora I think we would see it

If it's strong enough, we'll see it. I've often spotted aurorae during late July/August back when I was living down in Tipperary and Maynooth. Keep an eye on my Yahoo! auroral observing group groups.yahoo.com/group/auroralobserving/ for latest updates - no sign of incoming CME's alas.....

I dont think you'll have to worry about any twilight since we have wall to wall cloud at the moment.....

I just had a look with the 70mm F10 refractor with projection method, and those spots that are visible? - they are HUGE! There are many of them too. There is one in particular near the sun's limb, and whatever way it is shaped and angled, it looks like a massive crater on the sun's surface! Pretty amazing!

I tried taking a few pictures with the digital camera, but they didn't come up very good. Its very breezy here too.

I was wondering if any of you remember the last time we caught alot of sunspots about 2 months ago. I think I started a string on it... it was very breezy that day too.

Any connection between sunspots and Earth's weather? :
