Phil, Can you give some links to these camera's on Ebay?

Thanks

Jouke

Jouke,

Just go to www.ebay.co.uk and do a search for "webcam" and you will get hundreds of hits. They mostly appear to be brand new, still boxed, but "end of line" or similar stuff. The ultra-cheepo ones are plenty good for security purposes or for modifying as an autoguider.

I've been playing with CatSpy webcam security. It's a bit basic but free and does what it says on the tin. It can detect motion and start recording to your HD for later review. I'm looking around for a package that will also send me a text/picture alert to my mobile when the camera and/or alarm detects a break in. If anyone knows of any packages that do this, sing out!

If you set it to send an email to your mobile phone email address, you can get alerted immediately. Vodafone provide free email address to customers. If you need any help configuring, PM me. There is a demo version of the program available to check that it works with your camera.

It's a great program with lots of options. Enjoy!

The alarm system I have here will ring my mobile if it goes off, a simple autodialler on the alarm does the trick for this.

Don, I asked O2 what my mobile phone email address was - they didn't know. I had to set up an O2 email address and create a rule that forwards it to the mobile phone. Does that sound right to you? Or is there a more direct way?

Unfortunately I don't have an O2 account so I haven't any experience of their service.
What Vodafone provide is an email account which you can configure to send an alert tone via SMS to your phone on receipt of an email. Most modern phones will then let you read this email on the phone. The trick is to be alerted immediately that an event has occurred so that corrective action can be taken. Gotcha will also automatically play a sound file e.g. siren (included) or barking dog when an event is detected. This may also be of benefit :)

Hope that helps.
