A 12" scope with 50% central obstruction is equivalent to an unobstructed scope of 10.392" aperture.

Forgot to mention.Contrast suffers badly. Contrast in that 12" scope is only equal to a 6"scope!

Peter,

Doing some quick math mentally, I would expect the 12" scope to be reduced down to a 9" scope. Just curious, how did you compute 10.392"?

PS. More quick math suggests you took 25% to be by area as opposed to linear diameter (which I took).

Hi Guys,
Lets get a dose of reality here, 10-12" RC design tube assembly mounted on an AP1200/Paramount ME/Losmandy/Takahashi, take your pick, then add on a large chip ccd camera to take advantage of the nice flat field, and a high spec pc to run it, plus a whole bag full of filters and other accessories, and last but not least an observatory to house it. I think you all know what I'm going to say......... BIG MONEY!!
The simple fact is that based on the weather alone, it becomes very hard to justify such expense when you might typically use it only a few times per year, I should know as I'm in that situation! VERY frustrating.

Anthony, as your in Greece, you don't apply to this criteria!

Dave,

I must confess that the weather gods have taken up residence here in the southeastern Meditarranean.

I do agree with your comments .... the "return on equity" may not be as high in Ireland (due to the weather) than would be the case for other locations.
