Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better programs, and the universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the universe is winning.

Hi All
I am looking for a tripod for my Zenithstar 80, 2.5kg is weight, I am looking at a surveyor's tripod and I found one, a heavy duty large head at www.hitechniques.ie/ it weights in at 6.4kg, heavier than most Manfrotto tripods I was looking at and has a standard camera screw, I have the tripod head and made of aluminium.
I believe that this will be more than enough, but I would like any opinions that anyone may have.
Many thanks.
Paul

Better that old people should die of talk than to have young people die in war.

Are you sure about the mounting screw? The standard camera thread is 1/4" 20.
Camera tripods capable of taking loads of over 2.5kg (Icamera and head) should have a 3/8" mounting screw, and the ones I found on the manufacturer's website that stated a screw size in the specs said 5/8".

Hi John
I have a Manfrotto 141 three-way head and the mounting screw is a 3/8 with a 5/8 adapter mounting screw, this I will be attaching to the tripod and the scope attaches to this.
The store is in Rathcoole, not too far from home, so I'll take my 141 head along and see if it fits.

Hi John
I went to have a look at the tripod, and you were correct, the head would not attach as the mounting screw was too large, still, live and learn.
I guess I'll have to go down the photographic tripod road.

Knowing that you can't do something is also valuable
I have an Atlas Pro 4 tripod that will take a load of 5Kg with the right head. It cost €110 when I bought it and I recently replaced the head that came with it with a Triton Action Grip because those generic 3-way pans have three flex points and suffer from some movement when heavily loaded.

Hi John
I picked up a Manfrotto 055 tripod in Dublin today, it cost €150, it can take a weight of 7kgs and should be enough for all my needs.
