I've heard of people actually doing this, no, not exploding them but annoyed astronomers pointing them at an annoying nearby light (at the light sensor) and fooling the light into thinking its daytime, thus putting it out.
Shane,
Gimmicks are cooool , well at least in this instance.
And you can get arrested for this in the UK
Problem here is that the sensor is on top of the light ususally, which means you cant hit it with a laser from the ground and knock the light off. Or so I've been told

When it says that you can only order >5mW lasers for professional use, what exactly does it mean, if you tell them you're an astronomer and are going to use it for collimating your optics, would that be enough ???
It doesnt say that you need to be an employee in a company who is ordering it for a company, besides these are american laws, they obviously dont apply here.
Those Wicked lasers/light-sabers are awesome !!!
Um.. a 2mw red laser will do for collimation. What are you actually planning on using a >5mw laser for Dave?

You have to have a little fun,
Seriously though, its would be great for collimation, given that there is a fair amount of light poollution here, I reckon I need a brighter laser to set it up  , maybe a 20mW
Forget boxcutters, I reckon the FBI/CIA in the US will be onto Meade and try and ban some of the features in the LPI, think about it,
LX200 GPS / LPI /Laser pointer and the auto-tracking/giuding feature on the LPI, that could be a lethal combination.

Hi, just wondering if the following is any good for star pointing and aligning etc?
532nm green laser @ 89.00 euro.
Bill H.
Hi Bill,
have you got a weblink perhaps for these lasers that you are referring to that we can find out for you?
Generally, it comes down to the mW power consumption of the laser. The ones we are talking about are about the same price as you quote here. Our ones are powerful enough (5milliWatts), and focused properly, to give a finite and focused beam almost 2km long.
