I had asked a similar Q of atlasnova and they said that the red lasers projected a dot whereas the green one shows the beam also I'm presuming that this has got something to do with the sensivity of our eyes to particular colours and the power output required to project a beam of a certain wavelenght and the obvious hazards associated with that.
This is not based on any scientific background but just seems logical to me,I'm open to correction.

All lasers produce dots rather than beams.

Beams are only created when the photons of light strike something like dust in a room or water particles in the outdoors. Some photons are intercepted by particles and create the illusion of a beam.

A red or green laser can both produce a dot or a 'beam' depending on atmospheric and lighting conditions but as both are at different wavelengths those conditions are not the same.

A maser won't produce a visible beam as the wavelength (microwave) is out of the visual range.

The colour of a laser is dependent on which light source is being stimulated and the wavelength it emits light at.

Hi Guys
Just off the phone to Seattle and had a long conversation with a very nice lady that sells the lasers to NJ Nightsky, they and only one other group in the US have a special price deal on these lasers.
This company can sell lasers up to 20mw but only to verified users ,(again due to US litigation laws) ,They buy in 1000 lasers at a time then test each one find its actual output and certify it for you on a seperate piece of Company headed note paper,as all of the lasers are officially stanped <5mw so they can be "Legally" sold in the US.
They then sell the actual 5mw ones on their EBay site for $59.95 and hold the stronger ones for verified customers.
I have just ordered some 13mw lasers for $79.95 + $12 pp& ins direct to Ireland This is the special price they give the two US groups, but now WE have that facility here, the only problem is that you have to be an actual PAID UP CLUBMEMBER of an IFAS club, any Irish orders will be verified by means which I wont disclose online but I will be contacting clubs individually to inform them of the procedures.
It might sound long winded but the company has to be sure whom theyre selling to and I think were getting a great deal,There is other info re methods of delivery which I will also inform club Sec's about, but again not on line.
They will have a website up and running shortly www.atlasnova.com their ebay address is stores.ebay.com/lasers-and-silver_
Hope this is of use.
Eugene
PS I wont be charging IFAS for the phone call

Thanks for the info Eugene. I ordered one last monday and received it today. Have yet to use it at night but is super bright during daylight hours and is easily visible outside for a considerable distance.

Specs for astronomy lasers are between 20mWand 25mW and price is still $79 but I paid $21 for shipping and $8 for remote.

Cheers
Trevor

That's seems a bit of overkill. I have a 5mW laser which does me fine. And it cost about €45 including shipping from the US. If anyone's interested I'll see if I can dig up the name of the seller.
