iPhone Apps for Astronomy

Hi all, for those of us lucky to have an iphone, I'd like to review/recommend some iPhone apps for astronomy. I have found the iphone invaluable as a tool to help with all things going on out there at night. The great thing about them is that they are very cheap, the most costly one for me was €15 There are so many now, allow me to list a few I have..

SkySafari - an absolute gem of an app!!!, this is a €15 star atlas with over 2.5million stars down to magnitude 12, the detail and information is increrdible, pictures of areas zoomed in are amazing, night vision feature also included, can even do telescope control! has to be used to be believed, I can't recommend it highly enough

Free Light does exaclty what it says - uses your led light to find your way around, free to downlaod

NightVision A red night vision torch using your screen, you can vary the light intensity - free to download

ScopeTools Another free app, this is a great thing, it gives you time and location, there is a level on it, handy for the mount also a compass, and a calculator for calculating you magnification at the eyepiece - free to download

Messier list - gived lots of detail and pictures of all messier objects - free also

Planets another lovely app for free showing the rise/set times of the moon and planets for any given day

Moon Globe HD for €0.79 this is superb, the detail on the moon is fantastic, you can zoom in anywhere on the moons surface, complete with all lunar crater names and details

These are just a very few of many apps on the iphone, from news, pictures, a so much more. I find that it has really revolutionised the way I plan an obseve through any session, I wonder how did we survive at all :laugh:

If you have the opportunity to purchase an iPhone, I cannot recommend these apps highly enough !

AstroCalc is a good app for calculating magnification and field of views.

WeatherPro is a very good weather app.

MoonMapPro is an excellent app with very detailed lunar maps.

I would agree with Keith on Messier List and Moon Globe (there is a free version of this which I use). I'd also recommend:
Starmap - a pocket planetarium €12
Exoplanet - a daily updated database of all discovered extrasolar planets FREE
Galaxy Zoo - an iPhone version of the well known galaxy classification project FREE

I have Starmap too, but I find it doesn't offer as near as much information as SkySafari, and seems to be limited to Mag6 stars, but hey, it's not too bad, considering that this was dream stuff in the last few years.

For non-iPhone users out there, particularly Android phone users, checkout Google Night Sky. Use it in conjunction wth your GPS turned on (rather than by phone network triangulation) and watch the sky show up in front of you on the tiny c. 4 inch screen!
