Anyone ever use this "expose to the right" method?

I have certainly used it but mostly by accident. I can't say over exposing a shot in bad light pollution really helps. Even in semi-dark skies I tend not to overexposure to avoid a blow out from background light. An LPR filter is probably a better option.

I have never heard of this Method, sounds interesting in theory as he can show that you can get decent results. Everything he said is absolutely correct, but there is NO substitute for dark skies.
I guess this will give encouragement to all those who live in light polluted areas.
I would like to see someone in lives in a city try this. Anyone interested?
Keith.

My north Dublin suburban skies are a big light pollution challenge so I will certainly try it with my canon, LP filter and tripod as soon as the sky permits. I doubt that I will capture the Milky way, but its worth trying anyway. I wonder if the ETTR method would work with a CCD camera?

This is a shot I took from my backyard in suburban Sydney. The light pollution there makes Dublin seem mild in comparison.
I got around the light pollution as best I could by taking a series of short non-overexposed (22 x15 second) shots, stacking in DSS and using a bit of photoshop. The averaging seems to help remove some of the problem.
Nothing beats a dark sky though.

That looks great. Milky way Dublin seems doable then.
