Beautiful image, thank you.  Do you know what the blue object in the upper left is?  A faint planetary nebula?

hi Mike & thanks.

In all honesty I don't know. I have seen it in other people's images. It shows up well in the Ha & OIII wavelengths but when I had the image plate solved in astrometry.net - there was no reference to it.

Perhaps someone on here can shed some light on it....and whether or not it has a name. Tomorrow I might try annotate the image via PixInsight.....see if it throws up anything.

Brendan.

Some Googling reveals that the object is Howell-Crisp 1, a probable planetary nebula that was only discovered in 2006!  Here's a link: www.narrowbandimaging.com/hc1_planetary_page.htm

Wow - that is amazing on two counts. One - great detective work - I am not sure how you tracked that one down.

The other reason.....I have spoken to Richard Crisp before via the FLI forum. (By the way....he does not like my images because I always remove the magenta from the stars in Hubble Pallet - narrow band images. He thinks that is against the Gold Standard set by the iconic Hubble image: Pillars of Creation). He has been of help in some ways to me (he is VERY knowledgeable about CCD technology) and in fact, because of a prior discussion with him & others, this particular image has more Green than any previous image of mine.

So - thanks Mike. I may risk his scorn (again) at my processing - just to show him the HC-1 in the image.

Brendan.

That's a great coincidence, small world Brendan!  I guess faint object like that could easily escape detection before really deep images, like yours, became possible.  HC-1 stands out beautifully in your image but is just a smudge in many earlier ones.  I wonder if there are many other small nebula waiting to be discovered, especially in areas of the sky that are less commonly imaged.
