What you would have seen were animations, and frames taken from them. It is next to impossible to image them (or either of) as a 'photograph' because of the speed at which they move. It can be done of course, but you would need as fast a moving telescope/camera mount to achieve it.

However, the methods that the ISS and/or Shuttle were captured were the same as imaging a ceestial object. Once you know where to be on the surface of the Earth, that is! Then, you can take any frame from your avi 'movie' (frames stacked in e.g. Registax make a photo) and use it as a photo. What would be seen is something like this:

Photo taken from Astronomy Picture of the Day , 'photo' by Ed Morana.

Hope this helps,

Anyway, the word "photograph" means "image created using light" (Greek).
The technology used is unimportant.
The less exact word "Imaging" has become popular because "photograph" is associated with old fashioned film cameras.

Speaking of Greek, I believe Anthony did some shots of the ISS crossing the Moon earlier in 2006.
