Saturn this evening 25 Feb 2007 was created by DaveGrennan
As many of you know planetary imaging is not my 'thing'. Anyway this evening I was looking at Saturn through the 10" newt. The seeing was amazing. So I hooked a toucam up to my 5" Mak and started grabbing some frames. Considering that I've actually never imaged Saturn before, I'm pretty pleased with the result.

I completely processed this in Images Plus using its planetarly processing tools. Maybe the colour isnt all it could be but I did get the inner C ring and maybe (just maybe) a sniff of the encke division?? (You decide) If your monitor is bright enough, Rhea and Tethys are there too.

Grand image Dave,
Why not push it through registax, does images plus stack images?
The C ring is clearly visible, not so sure about encke.
Photoshop would sort out the colour for you, how many frames did you stack (presuming you did)?

That's a lovely image!

The C ring is definitely there ... the enke devision is a little more debatable but I think I see it too .... so ... either we're all very susceptible to suggestions or it's really there :)

Anyhow, a great first Saturn image!

Looking at it again, the bit that looks like the encke division is too far from the outer edge of the rings to be it. So no encke division this time. Maybe next time!

Yes Dave, Images Plus does exactly what registax does. The main difference is in registax you select a percentage to reject based on a quality estimate. In IP it grades each image A-F and you select what grades to use. I only selected A images for that shot, maybe I should have included B images too. Just ordered a new SPC900 webcam so I can tear it apart and stick in a new CCD and TEC cooler. With that done the images should be markedly better.
