Where is it going wrong? was created by smahon
I've recently bought a canon eos400d and used the advice in various threads to buy the correct adaptors to connect to my telescope.
I gave it a test run last night with a 20mm eyepiece in the adaptor and just took a few test shots of the moon.
However, the pictures came out terrible with a very visible blue ring around the moon and a little bit blurry.
The blur I can fix, but the chromatic abberation (is that right?) worries me.
I have Skylux 70mm refractor with original eyepieces.
My main question is:
Is the problem just with the eyepieces or am I wasting my time trying it with this particular telescope?
I haven't noticed this problem when just viewing through the telescope as normal.
Thanks
Stephen

Hi Stephen, it could be any of a few things
- the quality of the scope's lens
- the quality of the 20mm lens itself
- focus
- the weather itself, it was very frosty last night - 2 things 1. was there a 'ring' or halo arond the moon? 2. dew on your scopes lens.
Can you post a picture?
Keith..

Thanks for the quick reply Keith.
Unfortunately, I was so disgusted, I deleted all shots off the memory card.
But I'll take some more over the weekend and post them up (it's a bit foggy tonight).
It was definitely a blue "ring" around the circumference of the moon, but I didn't actually check the front lens of the telescope for dew either (duuh...)
I know what I'm trying to do is nothing compared to some of the great pics I see on here, but I want to get the basics right first.

Don't be too disheartened Stephen, I started off with a lot less !!
Astrophotography like anything else usually takes sometime to get right, once you're there - you're hooked. Keep trying.....

Stephen, I totally agree with what Keith says there.... I remember my first "astrophotos", by hand holding my "cheapo" digital camera to the 25mm lens of myfirst scope, a 93mm refractor. Most turned out pretty bad, (for the one decent shot, there was about 50 terrible ones). However, as time went by and I got lots of tips from the experts on the board here (like Keith for example!!), things improved as time went by.
Everyone has to start somewhere, but be warned, when you gett hooked.... it becomes an obsession!!!!!!!!
One thing you could try, is to shoot the moon in Black and White, if your camera has those settings (With a Red filter if you have one)

Hi Stephen.
Like the lads said,
Its a learning curve.
I've only been at this astrophotography lark for just over a year and
let me say,
the soundest most impartial and helpful advice I got was from the members of this site.
Don't be afraid to post up anything.
Post up the shots even if you think they look terrible
or if you know there is something wrong with them....
that way we can discuss what went right or wrong.
It's in these kind of discussions I've learned the most.
It's boring to just see awesome pic after awesome pic....
The real meat and potatoes is in the dissecting and critiquing of a shot.
