Asteroid Animation

Hi All,

This was totally unexpected I was out imaging the Jelly fish nebula in Gemini early in December, The exact date is on my laptop which is being fixed at the moment. When I finished processing I noticed a line through the image that was slow moving and I knew it was not one the usual things that ruin an exposure. The exposure was over 6 hours. So I sent my findings to David Grennan to see what it was and he confirmed it was an asteroid. So Dave did all the measurements in astrometrics and told me it was Asteroid (270) Anahita - Magnitude + 11.9. I was very happy and surprised to capture this Asteroid even though it was not my initial intention.

The Animation is 6 x 5min exposures over 6 Hours of Imaging.

looking at this image and seeing the natural way in witch all these elements move within our solar system has given me the momentum to try it again and go for my observatory code and look in to the field further.

How cool is that!!

Its great seeing things like this as it shows the universe isn't all static unchanging(on human timescales)like most things we look at up there.

I don't see the Jellyfish Nebula, just some space rock moving across the FOV...




That's a pretty cool find Carl, I bet your heart was in your mouth when you 'discovered' it on the back of the recent Irish discoveries!
