Good 200mm lens for Canon Eos

I am considering getting a 200mm lens (or something similar)for my 450D to do some piggyback photography on my C11. Can anyone recommend a good lens (but not expensive) that might be suitable?

For about 200+Euro you can pick up a Sigma 70-300mm APO DG lens F3.5-5.6. I use one of these and I think Wellbuttie does also (you've probably seen some of the class shots he has got). If you've money to spend then a fast fixed lens would obviously be better. The nice thing about the Sigma 70-300 is it's versatile for regular photography, so it won't go to waste.

Fully agree there what John M has said, I too have this lens and is quite a good lens, you'll get some decent results. If you got the money, then a Canon ef 200mm 'L' lens is superb, and the Canon ef 70-200mm 'L' zoom lens too!

I use the Canon 90 - 300 EF lens and find it
very versatile and good quality for the price.
(even more so because I got it from Argus when
they incorrectly priced it!)

The L lenses are the biz for many reasons,
optically obviously but one of the big advantages for
astro stuff is the infinity setting.

The L lenses are exccellent but are expensive.
I got mine secondhand, which was the only way I could afford them.
If you are looking for a lens for life, them are the ones.
