Look out behind Moo! was created by Frank Ryan
Ahh panto season...

Well,
I spotted the Moon rising early yesterday and
thought to myself that if it was clear today I'd
try and shoot a Moon rising behind horizon shot
seeing as I've never actually done that.
(and that I've not got the camera out in Months on end)
So it was good fun hunting down a suitable location
using Google earth, Stellarium and a compass.

The first shot was at 2:50 pm so the Moon was a bit wishy washy
(and actually tough to spot against the blue sky)

As it rose a bit and the Sun set it got a bit brighter.
I scooted off to another location
(basically the hill I was shooting against)
and waited for another Moonrise to catch it in a darker sky.

The ETX 125's focal lenght ment I had to shoot 2 shots
(one half of the Moon top and bottom)
then join them in photoshop.
(I must pick up a focal reducer!!)

Anyway...
here they are...

While a shot with a Friesian rumminent in the foreground in front of the moon does not have the same Gravitas as one of Anto's Parthenon shots, I have to say I am still udderly impressed by those images Frank. ;)

I herd you took more pics than these. Cud you show us some more?

Ok, I think I have milked this of all the puns I can think of

Yes you deserve a 'pat' on the back for that load
of 'bull'.

Arragg! Stop!

After seeing Anto's Moon shots some years back
and to a lesser degree the work of Laurent Lavenaet
I've been itching to try this kind of shot out.

It was a real supr of the moment thing
and you'd really need at least a few days to
work out and re-con a good place to shoot and shoot from.
Also there has to be zero cloud on the horizon for miles.
(there is a slight bit of grey cloud in the second image)

The last one the foreground is out of focus because I litterally
drove towoards the mountain I was shooting against to get a
'second' Moonrise with the added bonus of a slightly darker sky.

I took a shot of a plane flying over in the shot..
it was about a half a frame above the top frame,
it would have been too cool if it passed in front of the Moon!
Here is that shot(s).
It's 3 frames..
plane, top half of Moon and bottom half of Moon.
Kinda goofy but I like it...

Please..no 'Fly me to the Moon' puns!

Excellent photos Frank!

I've been planning a particular image for some time now but getting the exact location of the moonrise to line up with the taget is't always easy as we get so few days with a clear horizon.

Is there an add-on to Google Earth which would show the exact location of moonrise for each day of the year? Would be useful for planning these sort of images.

Those are class shots there Frank,
I think the plane is better above the moon rather then crossing it.

Like Michael, I have a shot in mind for a long time now along these lines, I even went off and got a lens for the camera recently for it, if only I had the time.

Frank - thanks for posting - I have to say I like number three - both moon and foreground rustic - the diagonal landform conveys a certain dynamic to the shot - and you can imagine the moon emerge.

Thumbs up!

I should also say that the first shot gives me an idea for a new technique to improve focus for the astro shots - first tie a wee light to a distant cow...
