Tail still visible on Machholz was created by James Butler
Only just.

I had clear skies all last night and had to be dragged away from my scope. Shots of The Great Orion nebula, The Horse's Head nebula, the Andromeda galaxy, the Pinwheel galaxy, the Whirlpool galaxy and Praesepe all waiting to be processed.

I also took another go at the Pleiades. Two shots to cover the main seven stars, spliced together and then processed.

James,

Very nice work. I finally have clear skies for this evening and will also pursue Comet Machholz using a CCD approach. I am happy to learn the tail is still there.

It was clear in south Kerry last night ??
Is Limerick under perpetual cloud or what??,
Is the rest of the country getting clear skies ??

Was there supposed to be a link or image in your post James?

Nice shots James, I'm envious of the clear skies in Kerry! This is my 10th night in a row completely overcast :(

I've noticed that whenever Kerry has good weather the rest of Ireland has poor weather and vice versa. In fact, I've had clear skies for the last 4 days!

I forgot to put the technical details. Here they are...

Machholz

Date: 31st January 2005
Time: 22:57 hrs UTC
Camera: Canon EOS300D at prime focus of LXD75 10" Schmidt Newtonian F4.0
Mount: LXD75 GEM
Exposure: 60 secs
ISO: 1600
Processing: PSP9 - Black and White Points

Pleiades

Date: 31st January 2005
Time: 22:45 hrs UTC
Camera: Canon EOS300D at prime focus of LXD75 10" Schmidt Newtonian F4.0
Mount: LXD75 GEM
Exposure: 60 secs (2 shots taken - one of each half of the cluster)
ISO: 1600
Processing: PSP9 - Cut and paste both images to a fresh document then Black and White Points

At the moment the clouds have moved in but if it clears up later then I am going to try GuideDog with the LPI as autoguider and EOS300D with 200mm lens piggy-backing and see how accurately I can track for a longer exposure of 300 seconds.
