Comet Hartley 2 from Waterford was created by wellbuttie
Comet Hartley 2 (103P/Hartley), imaged from Waterford, Ireland, using a Canon 350D c/w Astronomik CLS Filter and Megrez 90 Telescope, from Tues 12th to Weds 13th Oct, 2010. 97 x 120 second exposures were taken, however, I ended up using 51 for this stack.

Sky Glow conditions were very bad and this proved to be a very challenging object to track and image, so I was delighted that something turned up.

Thanks for looking.

Superb capture Steve, outstanding image of the halo, with a hint of the tail as the comet speeds towards us.

I have a CLS filter, but haven't used it much because it leaves a strong greenish tint with my unmodded DSLR. Of course, for a comet a greenish colour cast may not be such a bad thing?

Having said that, there is no colour cast in your image - great stuff.

Many thanks for the encouragement Mike. I forget to mention that the 350D I use has the IR Filter removed,so even with the CLS Filter, I get a strong Red signal.

Hi Steve,
That is a great image, very reminiscent of the view through the 20" during the week, diffuse big halo with a soccer ball sphere core, you captured it well.

Steve, that's a fine image you got there, I know how your skies are! I get the feeling that I am looking at it through a large APO refractor, it's very clean and crisp, a lovely image with a little tail and all!

Did you just add a capture of the comet against the background stars since there is no trailing?

Keith..
