Daytime Astronomy? - Yes You Can! was created by michaeloconnell
After imaging the Sun this morning,I decided to try and see some of the brighter planets and stars.
Below are a few video clips I recorded.
All taken with DMK21 camera and TEC140 refractor:

Venus - 99.3% phase - only a few degrees from the Sun

Mars

Jupiter - through light cloud

Visually, the cloud bands could be seen.

I also used an eyepiece and could see the distinctive red colour of Mars and the less obvious colour of Aldebaren.
I could also see stars down to magnitude 3.

Clouds rolled in before I could try this out with the 16inch.

very nice, I guess the 16" would give you brighter images.

If one can go down to mag 3 with a 5.5" scope, during the daytime, it'd be very interesting to see how deep a 16" scope will go.

FWIW, goto is absolutely essential for this stuff during the day.

The technique for finding a star during the day is different to night - adverted vsision does not work at all - in fact, the star will disappear with adverted vision. You need to look at the star straight-on to see it at all. Even though I had the mag 3 star in the FOV of the eyepiece, it was challanging to actually pick it out.

Superb videos Michael.
Really shows what can be seen in day light hours.
Nice job!!

Video clip of Mercury added from this afternoon.
Just about make out the crescent shape.
More obvious visually.

Hope to get Saturn in the next week or so.

Pointed the 16" skyward this morning.
I tried to see what the faintest apparent magnitude of stars I could see.
Got down to about mag +5.5.
Slightly hazy skies didn't help.

When looking at Jupiter, I could see the moon Europa next to it.
Lots of subtle detail in the cloud belts.
GRS also on show.

Here's a simple video clip of Jupiter taken with the DMK21 and 16".

It looked much better through the scope.
I would be interested to see how a colour DMK camera would have handled it.

Here's a processed version based on a 2000 frame video clip
