So I decided to take my first lesson in merging images of different exposure lengths, and what better subject to do than M42, I feel like I still have more to do to bring out the core, I am a lot happier with the results of this one than my last one though

11x120S exposures
11x900S exposures
HA, SII and OIII all @7nm

SII - Mapped to Red
HA - Mapped to Green (And also luminosity layer)
OIII - Mapped to blue

Each exposure group was stacked and combined, then layer masking in Photoshop was used to merge the two different exposure times

And the resulting image:

Stunning photos, thank you, Carlight Express.

M42 / M43 are everyone's favourite nebulae.

However, I wonder is it at all possible to photograph the stars Theta 1 and Theta 2, i.e. the Trapezium shining the nebula? How about imaging the E and F stars also? Perhaps that might be too much of a challenge?

Aubrey.
