What's the shortest NIGHT of the year? was created by Frank Ryan
So the solstice is at 11:28UT this year.
So when is the shortest night?

That had me thinking - I would say that it is the closest night to the solstice - and as this solstice is just before noon (at Greenwich) that would make it the preceeding night (again at Greenwich).
So If I've got this pictured in my head correctly then take local solar time (noon is when sun is seen to be highest and crossing the meridian) then if Solstice is before this its the preceeding night and if not then the night that is to follow.
But - to be honest - I don't know but the above is my two cents worth...

Well Mark, I'm thinking the same thing and that's why I posed the question!
I'm going for a photograph that requires I shoot on the shortest
night but this may not be the night of the 21st.
Especially if Solstice occurs before noon on that day.
Or am I getting this totally A-Ways!? LOL.
It's not such a big deal,
I'm going to shoot it anyway tomorrow night...

well Frank, its can either only be the 20th or 21st, shoot both nights and figure it out later.
but unless you got a time machine, i suppose then its abit late for the 20th.
John, you must find the so called winters there quite balmy.
