[OT] Converting VOB to something useful :-) was created by albertw
Hi,
I copied (most of) Paul Tippers eclipse video at the SDAS meeting. Cian wanted it for the podcast so I gave him the DVD. I used DVDdecryptor to get it to the hard drive. Anyone know whats the best way to get this into a format which most people could actually play? Be that mpeg, avi.
This is to put onto the DVD for cosmos, but since that will have pictures as well I want to just include the video as a file. For this version anyway.
Cheers,
~Al
p.s. hardly any of you have sent me anything in the post yet for this! PLEASE send me images that you took so we can make a souvenier of the trip!

Anything but wmv! For starters you do need a codec. Secondly it's Windoze only. And thirdly it's crap.
TMPG will encode VOB to MPG as far as I know - no codec required. Not free though - the freeware version only does MPEG1 (VCD).
Personally my favourite is Divx (avi). Gordian Knot will do this for you. It's a bit complicated to set up but you only need to do it once. Very worthwhile and extremely useful for backing up your own DVDs - if you have kids you'll know why
You will need to include a codec for this - but that's free from www.divxmovies.com/codec/ - you can include it on the disk to save people downloading it.
Instructions for GKnot are at this site

why not use normal vcd, this way it might work on a normal dvd player so you can watch it on TV, is the file too big?

Problem is that I need this tested, finished, copied, labelled etc. by Friday. A cool multimedia DVD would be great, but I just dont have time to put it together.
