'Local' club was created by owen
Just wondering about joining a local club. I live in Longford, and there are no local clubs I can find (within 20-30 miles, or 35-50 km for those who have gone wholeheartedly metric). I know of TAS - good as it sounds, it's still a longish drive over not-so-good roads.

So - any clubs nearer, or any astronomers nearer?

Hi Guys - I'm just new to this forum, but I'm wondering where is the nearest club to me - I'm guessing Waterford (B&L) or Shannonside -
is there anybody even nearby?
Good luck -

The Waterford Astronomy Society would be glad to welcome you to join them. See www.deiseastronomy.com/ for details. Membership is spread across the county.. from west Waterford ... Dungarvan etc, right over to Waterford City.

B & L is limited to employees of that Company. However, "outsiders" are welcome to their meetings and lectures. Both clubs (Waterford Astronomy Society and B and L) work very well together... in my opinion a good role model of co-operation between organisations.

Hi Owen,
welcome to the boards!

Indeed, there are no clubs I know of nearer to you. TAS has 2 members from Longford/Ballymahon (is that right?) areas who do come regularly. The only thing I could suggest is that if you want to get into astronomy but your only outlet is too far, you might consider then simply to come along to any observing sessions we have. You don't have to be a member, and at least it will give you a chance to "get out there" and do the hobby.

Otherwise, if there's a defunked Astronomy & Space outlet, this could be your only option.

Seanie.

PS - I heard a while ago of Astronomy & Space/Astronomy Ireland trying to get a 'branch' going down there but it fizzled out very quickly from lack of people in the area interested.

There is/was a club in west meath, see www.esatclear.ie/~ckilduff/index.htm for Westmeath Astronomy Club's website.

Do not know what their present status is though.
