Jouke, I personally don't know much about this camera, but i can tell you one thing - A few shots were posted on the astrophotography mailing list last week, i think i deleted them by now, but this camera produced some superb shots. Worth getting!

Jouke,
I am also looking for precisely the same camera. It produces incredible astrophotographs. Now, as to price, we can do better than the price you were quoted. Please look at the link below where the body is sold for 904 euro with a nominal amount for shipping and insurance.
It is my suspicion (and hope) that the price will drop off after Christmas so that we can get our hands on a similar model.

Everyone in Ireland buys Meade, and they all buy them from Lidl.

I've also seen some amazing photos taken with the 300D. However, the choice (from the Canon anyway) seems to be between the 300D and the more expensive 10D. The 10D actually works out a lot more expensive since it's sold as body only; at least the 300D has a lens in the box.
From reading the reviews, the sensor chip is the same, the 10D has a metal body and more menu options and control over the settings. But one of the differences that is pointed out is the 'mirror lock' - The 10D has it, the 300D doesn't.

Does anyone know if the mirror lock feature (whatever that is  ) affects the cameras performance for astrophotography? (I think it's got something to do with being able to lock the slr mirror in the 'open' position, and prevent vibration when the mirror moves from open to closed, not sure though)
John.
