Trebor - I found a nice image of NGC2163. Does it look similar to what you saw?

Cheers

Thanks for all the responses lads. I dont think it was ced 62 or NGC 2163 as they are too small to account for the size of the nebulosity visible. the nebulosity was about 20-30 arc minutes with Ced 62 and NGC 2163 being 2-3 arc minutes. Mybe there is further nebulosity surrounding both ced62 and NGC2163.

I did not take as much notes on the region as I should have done to make identification easier. That said, it was very easy in the 10X50's (from a dark site) so I presumed it would be on cartes du ciel. (maybe I am missing catalogues)

It could be IC2162 as this is 15 arcminutes in Diameter but I think it is a little too east from where I was looking. Ced 62 and 2163 seem to be in correct location...

Kieran do you have more info on LBN858...

Nothing for it but to have another look when it clears again.

Thanks lads.

Cheers
Trevor

just afterdoing some more research. It seems this area is notorious for confusion.

According to
www.seds.org/~spider/ngc/revngcic.cgi?NGC2163

2163 has been cross confused with CED 62, DG 87, LBN 855, bipolar nebula in the past.

There is also another german article dealing with it here
www.klima-luft.de/steinicke/Artikel/n2163/n2163.htm

I also added more catalogues to CDC and there is a bright nebula LBN 855 also in the area. Perhaps it is the combined light of a number of different objects we were seeing. Will have to double check

Cheers

TheSky shows NGC2163 in that location.

Seanie - do you actually read the posts? :D

Of course, Dave! ->
